Planning to automatically renew your Home Insurance? Hang on a second. If you’ve made any of the following changes–talk to your broker!

May 17, 2019

What do you do when you receive your Home Insurance renewal in the mail? Do you carefully scan your limits and deductibles, taking account of any changes made in the past year? Let’s be honest: unless you have experienced a major rate jump, you probably let it renew automatically. After all, who wants to make an effort to take stock of your contents, risk a rate change or talk to an insurance broker?

We get it. But we still think you should take some basic steps to ensure that you are properly protected and that you are taking full advantage of any discounts.

So if you’ve made any of these changes, we suggest you talk to your broker:

Pricey New Upgrades

It’s important to check in with your broker when you purchase an expensive new item like a TV, art, jewellery, glassware, a boat, or even a bicycle. Some of these items may require their own policy, whereas some will require a limit adjustment.

Renovations and Other Upgrades

If you’ve recently renovated your home, your previous limits may need to be adjusted to reflect the new replacement value. Alternatively, if you’ve updated your plumbing, your roof, or installed an alarm system or sump-pump, you may be eligible for new discounts.

Home-Based Business or Rental Services

A home-based-business or renting part of your property out is a great way to generate extra cash flow. However, you should be aware that this will likely require an update to your home insurance.

Paid Off Your Mortgage

If you have recently paid off your mortgage–congratulations! As a bonus, hitting this milestone will likely mean that you are eligible for an additional discount on your home insurance!

Taking the time to ensure that your most valuable asset—your home—is appropriately protected will save you a lot of financial strain should something unpredictable occur. At PROLINK—Canada’s Insurance Connection, we want you to feel confident that you have the right coverage. With over 40 years of experience and access to over 30 insurers, we can offer you a choice of solutions, price points, and other benefits to fit your needs.

One more thing: if you’re part of a professional association and you have never looked into it before, we strongly recommend that you investigate your group insurance program. You could be saving hundreds of dollars off of standard market rates.
